How to Manage Athlete Selection

Sport Resolutions (SR) has dealt with over 70 selection cases since 2017 across 20 different sports. SR in association with 4 New Square Chambers will be hosting an event on athlete selection. The seminar will focus on the elements required for an effective selection process, and cover guidance on how to achieve and deliver a fair process, as well as considerations in drafting an athlete selection policy and running a selection appeal procedure.

The event is designed for professionals involved in the process of selecting athletes for major competitions such as chief executives, performance managers and directors, head coaches, athletes, athlete representatives, selection panel members, in-house lawyers, lawyers in private practice, arbitrators and interested academics.

The event will take place on Thursday 8th December at the Sport Resolutions office, 1 Paternoster Lane, St Paul’s, London, EC4M 7BQ, between 13.30 and 15.30, followed by some time for networking. Drinks and snacks will be provided.

The event provides 2 hours CPD.

  • Run an effective selection meeting and improve communication amongst the parties involved

Daniel Saoul KC

Daniel Saoul KCBarrister

Daniel Saoul KC is a barrister specialising in sports law, public law and commercial dispute resolution. He originally qualified as a solicitor with Herbert Smith, before moving to the Bar in 2008. He took silk in 2019. He is recognised as a leading barrister in his fields of practice, and his expertise in sports law extends across the full range of work, from advising on governance issues, selection disputes, disciplinary matters, anti-doping, funding, sponsorship and commercial matters. He has substantial experience of advising governing bodies, clubs, athletes and other organisations on these issues.

His experience of selection matters extends to drafting selection and appeal policies, chairing selection panels (including for Olympic Games), representing governing bodies and athletes in appeals, and acting as arbitrator. Prior to training as a lawyer, he competed as a rowing cox, gaining honours at the Rowing World Cup, Commonwealth Rowing Championships and Henley Royal Regatta, and subsequently acted as Secretary of Britain’s leading club, Leander, as well as serving on the Council of British Rowing.

Daniel is also a member of the Sport Resolutions Panel of Arbitrators and Mediators.

Pippa Manby

Pippa ManbyBarrister

Pippa Manby is a barrister whose wide-ranging commercial practice incorporates a sizeable sports law element. She was called to the Bar in 2010 and has practised at 4 New Square since. She is recognised as a leading junior in the field of sports law by the leading directories.

Her experience of sports law is extensive and includes experience of anti-doping disputes, selection disputes, disciplinary matters (including on-field disputes), governance, anti-corruption and commercial sporting disputes. This experience covers the full range of sports and she acts for NGBs, athletes, coaches and other stakeholders in the sports world.

Pippa has drafted and advised on a number of selection policies and has sat as an independent legal observer on a number of selection panels which have included selections for elite athlete funding, world class programmes, the Olympics and Paralympics and the Commonwealth Games.

Pippa is a member of the Sport Resolutions Panel of Arbitrators and Mediators.
